Payroll & Taxes in Rwanda

Employee Income Taxes:

Employee income taxes in Rwanda are between 0-30% depending on income, as follows: 

  • Below 30,0000 RWF: 0%
  • Above 30,000 RWF: 20%
  • Above 100,001 RWF: 30%.

Payroll Cycle:

Employees in Rwanda are typically paid on a monthly basis.


Employer Costs in Rwanda

Employer Contributions:

The employer is required to contribute 5% of the employee's gross salary.

Employee Contributions:

The employee's contribution is 3% of the employee's gross salary.

There are 14 national holidays in Rwanda:

Vacation Time in Rwanda

Employees in Rwanda are entitled to 18 working days of paid annual leave.

One additional day of leave is given for every three years of continuous service (maximum of 21 working days).


Types of Leave in Rwanda

Sick Leave:

Sick leave entitlement is up to six months (subject to evidence).  The first three months are paid and the last three months are unpaid.

Maternity Leave:

In Rwanda, employees are entitled to 12 weeks of paid maternity leave. This leave may be taken up to two weeks before the due date.

Paternity Leave:

Employees are entitled to four days of paternity leave.


Health Insurance & Supplementary Benefits in Rwanda

Termination & Severance in Rwanda


Employees in Rwanda may have access to severance pay, depending on the type of employment and the reasons for termination. Severance pay is stipulated as follows:

  • Less than five years of service: one month’s salary
  • 5-10 years of service: two months’ salary
  • 10-15 years’ service: three months’ salary
  • 15-20 years’ service: four months’ salary
  • 20-25 years’ service: five months’ salary
  • 25+ years’ service: six months’ salary

Notice of Termination:

Notice of termination is not required during the probationary period.

Employments in Rwanda may be terminated upon written notice,  as follows:

  • Less than one year of service: 15 days’ notice
  • More than one year of service: one month’s notice

Unprotected and Protected Termination:

Rwanda law protects employees from illegal termination of employment, and as there are a range of reasons an employee can be terminated, it’s important for those looking to employ in Rwanda to reach out to us directly with questions.
