Vacation Time in Hong Kong

An employee is entitled to between 7-14 days’ annual leave for every 12-month period of employment with the same employer. Annual leave is then increased by 1 day for every year of service up to 9 years.

Types of Leave in Hong Kong

Maternity Leave:

Hong Kong’s maternity leave regulations include 10 weeks paid leave provided the mother has done the following:

  • Has been employed under a continuous contract for at least 40 weeks prior to the scheduled maternity leave
  • Has given notice of pregnancy and her intention to take maternity leave to her employer 
  • Has produced a medical certificate specifying the expected date of confinement if so required by her employer

Paternity Leave:

Paternity leave in Hong Kong includes 3 days’ leave that can be taken anytime between 4 weeks before the due date and 10 weeks after the due date, paid at 80% of their salary. 

Other Types of Leave:

  • Birth of a child (2 days) 
  • Marriage (10 days)
  • Death of a relative (3 days)
  • To attend an examination in secondary or university education (2 days for each examination, with a ceiling of 10 days per year).
