Sick Leave Entitlement in Finland

The entitlement to sickness allowance commences 9 working days after the illness begins (not counting the first day). The employer generally pays the employee's wages during this 10 day waiting period. Most employers also pay the full salary during the first one to two months.

A doctor's certificate is required for the period during which employees are unable to work.

The Social Insurance Institution (Kela) will pay sickness allowance for a maximum of one year (300 working days). If employee received pay during the period of illness, Kela will pay the compensation to your employer.

Parental Leave in Finland

Generous maternity/parental paid leaves. Generally paid for the most part by Social Security.

Maternity Leave

  • Maternity leave begins at the earliest 50 working days, and at the latest 30 working days, before the estimated due date. When maternity leave begins, Kela (Finnish Social Insurance Institution) will pay maternity allowance (äitiysraha) for a duration of 105 working days.

Paternity Leave

  • Fathers have the option to take time off work after the birth of their child.

  • They can take up to 54 working days off, and during this time, Kela provides financial assistance.

  • Fathers can spend up to 18 of these days at the same time as the mother to support the family during the early stages of the child's life.

Parental Leave

  • Parental leave comes after maternity leave.

  • Either the mother or father can take this leave.

  • Kela offers financial support for 158 working days during this period.

  • If you receive pay during maternity, paternity, or parental leave, Kela will pay a daily allowance to your employer.

  • Single mothers can receive an additional 54 working days of parental allowance.

Annual Leave Entitlement in Finland

If the employment relationship lasts for less than 1 year, annual leave is 22 weekdays. Annual leave becomes 30 weekdays when employment relationship is 1 year or more.

Severance Pay Entitlement in Finland

No statutory severance obligations.

Termination in Finland

Terminations regulated. Major blocks for specific categories. Procedural requirements depending on CBA/size/number of dismissals.
